All bariatric surgeries at Mercy are laparoscopic, a minimally invasive approach using a thin tube that results in smaller incisions and less scarring. The Surgical Weight Loss Center at Mercy Hospital offers two main types of bariatric procedures.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery is where the stomach size is surgically decreased by up to 60 percent and is recommended for patients with a BMI of 40 or greater. The procedure can be outpatient or a 23-hour stay. Through gastric sleeve surgery, the patient’s absorption and digestion is not altered and all food intake is absorbed for nutrients. Gastric Sleeve patients report experiencing rapid weight loss.
Gastric Bypass Surgery restricts the stomach size by creating a small pouch causing food intake to bypass a portion of the patient’s stomach and small intestine. Gastric Bypass is often referred to as the gold standard for metabolic and bariatric surgery as most patients will lose up to 60 percent of their body fat. Your physician will provide in-depth counsel as to which type of procedure is best for you.
Our team is invested in improving your health after surgery, and works collaboratively with you and your support system to accomplish that mission. In addition to the care team, our hospital offers recurring information sessions and support groups to help guide you both before and after surgery.
